Web Design
I started making web pages in 1994. Since then I have made both commercial and private sites using commercial software and the open source LAMP bundle. The projects have ranged from a single static web page to dusins of interactive pages, some of which have used Macromedia Flash, included video and sound.
Designing a web page is a highly iterative process and the customer is basically involved from start to finish. Mostly I prefer to work online, which for you means monitoring the development progress is as easy as accessing a web page.
When referring to the development process I usually divide the work into 4 stages:
Idea
It always starts with the customer expressing an idea. The idea may be described in any way imaginable, written down on the back of a napkin or published as a book.
Concept
Based on the understanding of what the customer wants, a concept of design is developed. Together with the customer this understanding evolves into something tangible.
Prototype
The concept is developed into a static, reduced or fully functional prototype that is presented to the customer. To reduce cost, any final adjustments are carried out at this stage.
Finished Product
Finally the finished product is made and approved. At this stage changes to the product is both costly and time demanding; and will usually not be part of the initial contract.
